American Discourse

I read this entry by Alien Laine about how people are politically crazy in web comments. I read this did not question what he was talking about. This American Life did a show about having to turn the comments on their web page off because of the way people act. This is also something that comes up all the time when it comes to YouTube comments. I have seen lots of flame wars and people say outrageous things in comments.

I do not think this is new in American Culture. As bad as we think it is now, it has been bad in the past also. At the Dawn of the American republic Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton wrote outrageous things about each other in their news papers. Dirty is not new, it is just been refined.

I think that this kind of dialog goes up and down like a roller coaster. I think we are still going up hill. I think it is going to get worst before it gets better. I think the likes of Karl Rove makes this worse. His ability to make every bit of government a major part of politics and the idea of "Permanent Campaign mode" has change the dialog in America. It has made the roller coaster hill higher.

One of the problems is that hyperbole is the language of America. It has been that way at least since the start of the television age and maybe before that. The reason the Andy Warhol coined the term "Superstar" is because the term "Star" was not big enough anymore. Politics is no different. You cannot just say that George Bush is a bad president, you have to say George Bush is a war criminal. There is no room for subtlety or nuisance. Everything has to be loud and clear.

For a long time I have seen this as "Shout Down" politics. You have the right of freedom of speech, but I have the right to shout you down as you try to speak. I think this has the effects of giving a bigger voice to people on the extremes. It also moves people who might not be on the extremes toward them. If they only way they will be heard is to shout they will shout.

I think these things are bad for the Republic. I think that we need to think more about politics. We need to be more complex and not less complex. We need to be more careful and select politicians who will be more careful also. I just do not see this happening anytime soon.

Who will decide

I really love this video. The Onion got this one right. I like the idea of every American is in their own demographic. It kills the idea of demographics.

Cool on You Tube

I have not read my copy of Cool Jerk Chickadoowa yet.

Paul Horn was interviewed by Square TV. He is talking about Cool Jerk. This is worth looking at.

Flickr, Video, and Donuts

Wednesday was the Day of the Donut in Flickr land. If you have not been paying attention first Flickr added video. Right away people some users protested video on flickr. As a reaction to those protest other uses demanded that flickr give us donuts. Of course I backed the group that demanded donuts.

I understand the idea that the customer is always right, but I am shocked at how entitled some users are. They feel offended that flickr would stoop so low as to offer video. Of course everyone knows that video is the least common denominator on the internet.

If they do not like a feature, don't use it. I think that Elkit in Wonderland said it very well.

I get that you may have no use for this feature, but I don't get the part where you want to forbid it to everybody just because it's not *your* thing.

I know people have very strong feelings about flickr, but you need to give it a chance to grow. I get it that at this time just about every internet user has a favorite site that has been ruined by change. Everyone has a story of a site that used to be great but changed and never recovered.

My problem is that people have not given video a chance. Instantly they said all the idiots from youtube would flood over here and destroy Flickr. They have not even used the feature. Months ago when I first heard rumors of video I did not like the idea, but I think flickr has done a good job with it. The 90 second limit seems to be a great idea. They are long photos and not short video blogs.

Now lets see if there is any change. I trust the flickr staff not to screw this up. I just wished more users had that kind of faith.

Living up to the Hype

I think the Onion really hit this one out of the park.

48 Hour Film Festival

I went to second two sessions of the 48 Hour Film Festival today. It was showing as part of Cinequest. It is also referred to as filmapalooza. It was a pretty good deal. Four hours of short films for only $10. It was pretty good bang for the buck.

What surprised me was how processional all of the shorts were. I know these were the top of the top, but every one of these looked professional. They look like they had professional lighting and sound. Most of them looked like they had high level acting also. I wonder what they city compositions are like. I wonder if they have lower level films. I wonder this because I come from the world of National Novel Writing Months, where most of the writers are amateurs. I wonder what a project like this would like like from a bunch of amateurs.

I will warn you their website, 48.tv, is kind of wonky. I had a better time finding some of the 48 hour film festival Films on YouTube. That includes the winner from San Jose, which is the movie embedded at the top of this post.

If you participate in San Jose, let me know. I would love to blog about your process. I would love to take pictures of your process.

Youtube Outage

There was a YouTube outage yesterday. I noticed because I read today that Pakistan 'sparks YouTube outage'. Pakistan was trying to block YouTube. According to the BBC "Pakistan ordered internet service providers to block the site because of content deemed offensive to Islam."

I think that blocking information is bad. Even if you object to that information, it is better to have that information there. If you have the information there you can speak to it and try to correct it. Without that information available it becomes taboo. Taboo information holds power. A power greater than it should hold.

I think YouTube has too much power for good. If you do not like what is on YouTube you can create your own video. You can put your own point of view up there. You can even start their own site taking the best off YouTube and put in on another site. Information is too fluid to block. Let your citizines decide.
