Bart Shooting

I watched this video to my horror. I watched it a couple of times to make sure it really showed what I thought it showed. I think that every American should look at this video. You should watch what happened to Oscar Grant. He is an American who was killed by his own government, at least an agent of the government. The video might not tell the whole story, but it starts the conversation.

There have been rumors that the police officer thought he was reaching for a taser and shot his gun instead. That might just be a rumor from people watching videos of the event. All I can say that the video show how just how messed up this whole situation is. If he was reaching for a taser, that would be messed up. Oscar Grant was on the ground in handcuffs. He did not need to be tased.

I want people to get to the bottom of this. I want justice. I want to know what was going through the mind of the cop. I am not sure we will get to the bottom of this.

The Oakland Tribune is doing a good job covering this story.

I thank Carlos Miller from Photography is Not A Crime for also embedding this video.

No sympathy

It seems that a student in Colorado was arrested for comments that classmates deemed sympathetic toward the gunman blamed for killing 32 students and himself at Virginia Tech. Wow! That just shocks me. Now sympathizing is enough to get arrested. Even if the guy was angry, it is not illegal to be angry.

I will admit that I have some sympathy for the gunman. I was an outsider in college. I knew enough people who did not have it all together. But for the grace of God go I. My brain worked correctly when I had dangerous thoughts. I had the brain chemistry to pull myself back from the edge.

I would never kill anyone. That does not mean that I have never been discussed with American Society. I do not know what that guy in Colorado said but to think no one could understand Cho Seung Hui it just dreaming. To ask no one to say think understand him is just putting on rose colored glasses. Cho Seung Hui was not a monster, he was a human. His darkness is in many of us.

Don't Call It YouTube culture gone bad

I heard today that the shooter in the Virginia Tech shooting mailed a package to NBC between the first and second shooting. I am now counting the hours from now until someone blames this on YouTube. I expect to hear a commentator to say this happened because of our look at me culture. I am expecting the internet and current youth culture to take a big heap of blame. I think all of that is bull.

This was a sick guy who did not get the help he needed. I do not know if he did not want help or if the system failed. This is someone who was damaged and snapped. This is plain and simple. Seeing the footage from the DVD convinces me he was ill. People like this do not need YouTube to snap.

The problem is that does not answer the question Why did this happen. In the end there is no answer to why. The world just works that way. I am sorry to say.

Guns

Guns
Originally uploaded by earthdog.
I went shooting with a friend last week. He is a gun enthusiasts. We got talking about a story I was writing and that got us talking about guns. He enjoys going to the range and he invited me to go with him.

I have gone to a shooting range before, but it was years ago. I had never shot anything larger than a .22. We would shoot .22 rifles in Boy Scouts. Those were always in outdoor ranges. Where we went to shoot the .22 pistol was an indoor range, but it was cavernous compared to the place we went this time.

This time I shot a Colt Model 1911, .38 Special, Walter PPK 9mm, Glock 9mm, and a Berreta 9mm. I shot the Colt Model 1911 first. This is a mythic gun to me. It was the side arm of the US Military for most of the 20th Century. I have read a lot of stories that are focused around the M1911. When I shot it, it was louder then I expected. It also had more or a kick than I expected. The sound was a little overwhelming. I would be focused on the target aiming, I would squeeze trigger, and the flash would surprise me.

The .38 Special made a lot of smoke and spewed a lot of GSR. I wanted to shoot this gun because I was thinking of it for a story. My friend liked to call it his Joe Friday special. This gun felt small in my hand. It was like the stock gave me nothing to hang onto. I did not enjoy shooting it.

If I wanted a gun that I could hit what I was aiming for, I could chose the Glock or the Berreta. Both of these guns felt good in my hand. I was a little more comfortable with the Berreta. I was a little more accurate with the Glock. Both of them seemed to fit my hand right. I know if I was to buy a gun it would be one of these two guns. I would like to shoot with them some more.
