Favorite Free Ways to fill your iPod

Life

You might cut buying new music out of your budget, but still want to hear something new. You can only listen to old music so much. There are a ton of places to go to listen to free music when you are connected to the web, like My Space, Pandora, and YouTube. It can be harder to find places for music when you are off line. Here are my top legal free places to download music from.

Daytrotter

Daytrotter is my favorite place to get free mp3s and my favorite place to discover new bands. To me, Daytrotter is indie rock heaven. Just about everyday there are four new tracks. Most of the time they are bands I never heard of before. Yes, you may not find your favorite bands there, but you might find your next favorite band there.

Here are a few of my favorite Daytrotter sessions

Dr Dog
Of Montreal
Titus Andronicus
The Silent Years
Ra Ra Riot

Podcasts on iTunes

There are thousands of free content on no iTunes. This content ranges from news to music, from Comedy to drama, and everywhere in between. Yes, the music content can be random. You have little control of what you are getting. There is a lot of content that is really cool.

CNet Free music Download:

There are some good stuff on CNet download.com and some bad stuff.

Amazon MP3 store

There is some free stuff, but often good cheap stuff. There do lots of stuff on sale. Every Friday they run $5 special.

SXSW Archives 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005.

There are lots of songs in the SXSW archives. They are not easy to look through either. But it really is worth your time. I have found a lot of new bands here.

The year of free entertainment.

My DVRs

I have been thinking about how much free media there is out there right now. Between Podcast, Free video websites, blogs, and YouTube you have thousands of hours free programing out there. This is only staying with legal sources also. I spend a lot of money on media every year. Between cable, emusic, going to movies, and all the rest of media I buy that is a lot of coin.

I have been thinking about just not paying for media anymore. I am thinking about going with all free sources. There are sites that give out free mp3s like Daytrotter. I can attach a computer to my big TV. I can watch podcasts, full TV shows on Hulu, clips from TV shows on Comedy Central's Website. There are even some professional podcasts out there.

I am not sure I could do this. I am not sure I could give up my cable television more than anything else. Having a TiVo Series3 makes having digital cable pretty cool. Without digital cable I only get one digital channel with antenna. It sees like a waste.

Maybe 2009, when I am saving up for something special, I will be able to get rid of all my pay media.

Hey RIAA, Share This...

It is amazing to me how often the some groups can get it wrong. I think the members of the RIAA should look at it basic concept. I wonder if those musicians see that the RIAA is wasting their money. I wonder if they see that it is being squandered by these idiots. The current business model for record companies is dying. They need to find a new business model. If they keep holding onto this one, the record business is doomed.

I will admit that I have stopped on-line music sharing because of threats of lawsuits and other law enforcement. It has not stopped me doing personal file sharing. I will share music with my friends. You would be amazed how many songs I have access to.

If I have one moral idea it is this, once a song has been in an advertisement I should be able to have that song for free. The advertisers have paid for that song. I should be able to go to their website and download that song. The ad is inflicted that song on the public. The listening audience should not need to pay for it after that.
