Cross play

Comic Con 08

I saw an odd trend at Comic Con this year. There were lots of women wearing men's costumes. I have seen this before, but it was really big this time. It is not that the women were trying to pass as men. They were trying to look like women, but they were dressed like Han Solo, Iron Man, or The Joker. I think this is getting to be a bigger and bigger trend. I think it is a good way for people to make costumes that no one has ever seen before. I think that having something people have never seen before is a big thing.

There were lots of women dressed as male characters. I only saw one man dressed as a female character. That is the man dressed like Harley Quinn in the photo above. I can see how there are few female characters that would look good as a man. I think that it would be cool to get a male Rouge or male Raven.

I am not sure what the increase in "cross play" mean. Yes, cross play is the term for dressing as a character of the opposite gender. I think that people are trying to push more the edge. I think cross play is an easy way for people to do this. It might also be a way to dress like a character that is not a sex symbol.

I will say again that this is the costume century. By 2100 people will be dressing like movie and comic book characters as part of their everyday life.

Century of costume

Comic Con 2007:

I have this theory that the 21 century will become the Century of Costume and Cosplay. I cannot tell you how many people I see dress up to go to movies. It seemed like people were dressing up for ever blockbuster this summer. People even dressed up to buy a book this year. No other reason, but to line up and buy a book.

I predict that by the end of the 21st century people will be dressing up like superheroes to go to work everyday, hanging out in pirate bars. People's whole lives will be attached for their fandom for a genre. Look, it already happens with goths and vampire fans.

I think it will be pretty cool with this happens. Costumes all the time. No need to worry about what other people think of you. No standards about how you should dress. No one looking down you because you are a fan. Is there something wrong with me that I want to see this?

Happy Halloween

Comic Con 2007: The Question

Comic Con 2007: The Question

I love when people dress up like obscure comic book characters. I know the Question had his own book. I know he showed up in the Justice League Unlimited cartoon. I also know that none of my sisters would be able to ID him. I think it is cool.

comic con 2007: Elvis Trooper and the Video Crew

There are lots of people walking around comic con making movies. It is some kind of sport or something. I have never seen one of these movies. I want there to be a "shot at comic con" film fest.

Comic Con 2007: Streaky and Krypto

I love this set of costumes. If you do not know, Streaky was Supergirl's cat and Krypto was Superboy's dog. They have recently received their own cartoon.

Comic Con 2007: Steampunk Ghostbuster

This might be the best costume I have seen so far. I love this idea. Someone call whoever owns the rights to Ghostbusters. I think this would be a good comic.

Comic Con 2006 was F'N Metal

Comic Con 2006 is F'N Metal
Originally uploaded by earthdog.

On Saturday at Comic Con I got a little bored taking pictures. I wanted to find something tun to do. I was alone so I could not pose with the people in costume. I wanted to do something I could make a Flickr Set out of. I kept on seeing the Jesus is Metal shirts. I thought to myself it would be cool to ask people in costume to throw horns like heavy metal.

I got great reactions from most of the people that I asked. A few said no and few did not understand. For the most part the people in costume thought it as a great idea. Some of them really rocked out.

The pictures that look the best are the people who totally broke character to throw horns. I think that is the spirit of metal. The problem is if you do not break character you ended up looking like you are casting a spell like Dr. Strange. Comic Con 2006 is F'N Metal For my money, Dr. Strange just is not metal.

I was really hoping to start a meme with this. I know other people saw me doing this, but I have not seen people I don't know post photos like this. I also was hoping someone would Boing Boing this set or somethings. It looks like I had no such luck. I will have to get more of these photos next year. Maybe If I work at it long enough it will become a meme.

Wonder Con

Troops
Originally uploaded by earthdog.

I am a little bitter about Wonder Con after losing my memory card. It has not turned up yet. My guess is that it is gone for good. I will have to just get over it.

I had a good time a Wonder Con. It is a big comic book show, but it is tiny compared to Comic Con in San Diego. Wonder Con is much more like a comic book convention. Comic Con is much more like a geek culture convention with comics being the belle of the ball. The floor at Wonder Con was walkable. I was not there to spend money, that made the floor less fun.

I was there to take pictures of people in costumes. I was a little disappointed at the number of people here in costume. I would never go in costume, but I am happy to take photos of them. I feel that is giving them the attenion they crave. This is why I am pissed about lossing my memory card. My Favorite costumes were Slacker Green Latern, Sherlock Homes Stromtrooper, Buddy Christ, and Alien. I hope the Alien guy won a prize. I was not sure what to make of this guy.

The programming at the convention was kind of light this year. Last year they seemed to have more panels. This year it seemed to be almost all Spotlights on Saturday. Every year there seems to be more and more movie promtion at comic book convetions. I wonder if it is a cheap way to market a movie. I know I am going to see Mission Impossible 3 after seeing J.J. Abrams speak. I can only spend about two hours watching people speak at a convetion.

referendum on comics

When I go to a comic book convention I feel like it is a referendum on what I want comics to be. I should only pick up comics that I would be willing to buy. I should only buy comics that are good. I want to encourge the good parts of comics. This sounds simple, but it is not.

There is so much crap out there. Most of it is unreadable. At these shows you get to see a lot of different things. Some times I want to tell some people to just stop. I want to tell them that their comics are not any good. I want them to learn something about storytelling. I hate when I pick up an ugly black and white comic because the person does not know how to shade.

I love stuff like Ask Miss Anthropy or The Stereos. These are the kind of books that I want to read. These books prove to me that there is something worth reading out there. It gives me hope that I should pick up books and give them a chance.

My least favorite thing are comics like Bumper. Whenever I see Bumper I feel that the person just created it to sell dolls. I do not want icons for icons sake. I want real content. I do not want to get something that is just meant for a hipster to lust after. I want something that speaks to me.

This year's Wonder Con was good enough that I am planing on going again in 2007. Hopefully I will not lose my memory card next year. Just remember, nerd is the new black.
