I need your help with tags

Comic Con 2008

I need your help tagging my Comic Con photos. I took over 700 photos at comic con. that is a lot of photos. I have not had time to tag all of them. There are lots of them which I have not idea what the tags should be. There are other photos which I know what the tag should be, but I have not found the time. I created a set of some comic con 2008 photos that need tags. You can also just look at the tag Needstags. Any help you can provide will be appreciated.

Cross play

Comic Con 08

I saw an odd trend at Comic Con this year. There were lots of women wearing men's costumes. I have seen this before, but it was really big this time. It is not that the women were trying to pass as men. They were trying to look like women, but they were dressed like Han Solo, Iron Man, or The Joker. I think this is getting to be a bigger and bigger trend. I think it is a good way for people to make costumes that no one has ever seen before. I think that having something people have never seen before is a big thing.

There were lots of women dressed as male characters. I only saw one man dressed as a female character. That is the man dressed like Harley Quinn in the photo above. I can see how there are few female characters that would look good as a man. I think that it would be cool to get a male Rouge or male Raven.

I am not sure what the increase in "cross play" mean. Yes, cross play is the term for dressing as a character of the opposite gender. I think that people are trying to push more the edge. I think cross play is an easy way for people to do this. It might also be a way to dress like a character that is not a sex symbol.

I will say again that this is the costume century. By 2100 people will be dressing like movie and comic book characters as part of their everyday life.

The Comic Con Bump

Comic Con 08: Iron Man

The comic con bump for my flickr photostream is coming to an end. I estimate that I received an extra 60,000 views from July 20 to August 10. I have to admit that this is one of the reasons I love comic con. I know the photos will get a lot of views. It would be nice if I could somehow make money from this.

The odd thing is that my older comic con photos also got a bump this year. The costume photos from other years got a lot of extra views. This has never happened before. I am not sure how it happened.

I also did not have any pictures that just took off. Many times a few photos would get 1000 views before I left San Diego. The photo below is my most view photo from Comic Con 2008 and it has less than 500 views. Many of the photos are in the 100 to 200 range.

comic con 2008

Right now I am working on my checklist. I have over a thousand photos of people in costumes. I want to figure out who I have and who I still need to get.

Back From Vacation At Comic Con

Comic Con 2008:

My vacation is just about over now. I did not blog very much while I was on the road. I spent my time, at comic con, with Kate, with my friends, seeing people, seeing movies, eating, and doing other vacation things. When I did have time at my computer I was working on my photos. I was looking through photos, uploading to flickr, or adding tags to the photos.

Comic Con was great. Kate had a good time going with me. It was her first comic con and I am happy that she had a good time. This makes it likely that we will likely back to Comic Con in the future. I am happy she had a good time.

One of the reasons she had a good time is because we got to see lots of friends there. Kate got to meet a lot of people from the first time. I am happy that Kate liked my friends and they liked her.

Top ten thing about comic con

10. Dumbrell Panel
9. Chuck Panel
8. Buying the first copy of Cool Jerk Vol 2.
7. Animation of Peanuts Panel
6. Taking Photos of People in Costume
5. Watching Chris Being a Tonight Show Correspondent
4. Shopping at Scarlett's Corsets
3. Walking around the floor before it was open
2. Watchmen Panel
1. Helping set up the Kids Love Comics booth

Top ten non-Comic Con Specific things

10. Driving down the San Diego with Kate
9. Sunday Brunch with Steve and Kristin
8. Swimming in Steve's Pool
7. Dinner at Pizza Port with Gerry
6. Karen's Birthday Dinner At Fred's Mexican
5. Dinner with the AZ girls at Ocean Beach
4. Dinner with Jimmy, Karen, Harold, Anna and Stella.
3. Staying with Steve and Kristin
2. Seeing people I do not see Often
1. Kate meeting my friends

Wonder Con 2008

Wonder Con 2008:

Over the weekend I went to Wonder Con. It was an alright comics show. It would have been nice if there were better booths. I was not impressed with the booths that were there. There seemed to be fewer indie booths this year. They also seemed to be of lower quality. The number of people in costume was good, but not great. I would say it was not as good last year.

In other comic book convention news, I hear that Comic Con overbooked the convention by 1000 tables. I hear that are cutting people back with over 10 year relationships with the convention. It is true that I am getting this information third hand. If this is true, I hope this is not the end of the convention as we know it. I doubt they care cutting the big booths from the major studios. What I like the best is the hard to find stuff, not the stuff I can find anywhere.

Wondercon is coming

Empire Pinup

Wonder con is this weekend. It starts on Friday. Of course I will be there. It is not as big of an event as Comic Con. I only go to WonderCon for one day. I think I would get really bored if I went there for all three days. Maybe if I did I would go to more panels.

Above is my most viewed Wonder Con photo. I will be there with camera in hand. I will be trying to get as many photos as possible. Photos of people in costume fuel views on flickr for me. Now that I have flickr stats to look at I will be interested to see what wonder con does to my views. Let me know if you will be there also.

I guess this means that If I miss Comic Con next year no one will look at my photostream.

Comic Con 2008 Wishlist: #2 Photography Panel

I know there are panels about costuming at Comic Con. I would like there to be a panel about Photography at Comic Con. I would love to here how other photographers approach Comic Con. I would like to know how they handle the technical challenges. I would like to know how they approach the subject matter. I would like to know what they look for in a photo.

I love taking pictures at Comic Con. It is easy to see on flickr that my photos are not like other people's photos. I think that is cool. I think even if only comic con photographers showed up at this panel, it would still fill up a small room. Now I just need to figure out how I get Comic Con to have a panel like this.

Comic Con 2008 Wishlist: #1 Flickr Party

At next year's Comic Con I would love for Flickr to throw a Flickr party. I would love to see some of the Flickr staff go to San Diego during Comic Con and have a meet and greet with Flickr users.

Comic Con is the highlight of my Flickr Year. It gets me more photos, more views, more favorites, and more comments that any other single event of the year. This year I have got lots of positive feedback for my photos. I got feedback from my contacts, people I do not know, and some of the people who are the subjects of the photos.

There are so many people taking digital photos at Comic Con. It would be a great place for Flickr to promote itself. Show the different Comic Con groups. Show people it is a great place to post photos from an event like Comic Con. There are lots of people there to promote your product to. A party might be a great promotion.

I think throwing a party would be a great promotional tool for Flickr. Maybe even do it as an art show. I know that most of us Flickr using Comic Con photo hacks would love to have our photos in a show.

For the last couple of years I have suggested having a gathering of Flickr users at comic con, but no one can ever agree on what to do. Not living down there it is hard to organize. No one wants to take charge because everyone is focused on Comic Con. Having Flickr throw the party might overcome that.

I would love the meet the other flickr Comic Con photographers. I have the feeling that it will not happen unless Flickr throws the party. I need a way to share this idea with Flickr marketing people.

Comic Con 2007: Crush

Comic Con 2007: Cute
Originally uploaded by earthdog.
I have been swimming in Comic Con Photos. I have been back from comic con for two days and I am not half way through the photos yet. I posted as many as I could while I was at the show, but I took around 2000 photos. It is a lot to go through and look at. Posting all of them would not be satisfying. I know I will be posting these photos for a while yet. Hopefully I will still have people's attention by the time I am done.

Looking at these photos so often, I think I develop crushes on some of the subjects of the photos. I see something in the photos that just draws me in. I cannot look away from the photo and wonder what the people are like. I think about the photography so much, I feel like I know more about the person that I do.

The moment of the photograph lasts a very long time for me, while it is just a nanosecond for the subject. I do not know if this woman will ever see this photo. If I met her again I know I could not explain how the photo effected me. I have tried with other women in the past and it has not come across.

I am not sure why the photos I take have this effect on me. I am not sure why I get the feeling that I know something about my subjects. This may be why I like photography so much. It is a way to capture a moment that cannot be captured any other way.

Preview night was crazy. It was much busier than last year. It seemed by 4 PM there were thousands of people there. The floor was packed almost the whole time. There were people bumping into each other the whole time. It was amazing.

I wonder if the whole show will be this big. The floor is larger than ever. I saw very few costumes last night. I guess that will pick up as the show goes on. It looks like this will be a good show.

The Summer Is Ending

It is Labor Day and I am trying to figure out where my summer went. As an adult summer is more elusive that it was as a kid. When you are in school summer is different that being in school. You know you have to make the most out of summer. You can see the days count away. Most of the time I was happy for school to start up again.

As an adult summer is no different than the rest of the year. I can take my vacation any time. Summer is just a time where I am worried about how hot my apartment gets. I get to go to baseball games in the summer, but sports go year round and I can always go to a game.

I will admit that I will be glad to see this summer come to a close. It has not been the greatest summer for me. The three markers of this summer for me have been my ex-girlfriend breaking up with me, Comic Con, and Labor day. The summer broke perfectly into two halves. Now that the summer is over I am not sure how my life will be different.

Comic Con 2006: Amelia Rules

Comic Con 2006: the books
Originally uploaded by earthdog.

Jimmy had his best comic con ever. He was surprised at how many books he sold. Comic Con was the debut of his new Amelia Rules graphic novel, Super Heroes. It was also the release of the hard cover editions of his other two graphic novels. The hard bound editions are beautiful. They have that feeling of what a kids book should be. People were just snatching up those books.

I hung out at Jimmy's both a lot during the show. The other people at the Kids Love Comics! booth were great. He even let me sit behind the table when I needed to take a load off my feet. It was good to have a place to stash my stuff.

Comic Con 2006: Amelia Rules

It was good to see Jimmy. We had dinner together on Saturday after the convention. I am happy that I can have friends from the old days but our relationship is not about the old days. I hope that Jimmy can break the bank with the new graphic novel.

Comic Con 2006: Stan "The Man" Lee

Comic Con 2006: Stan The Man Lee
Originally uploaded by earthdog.

I think I understand Stan Lee much more as an adult than I did as a kid. I think he created the Marvel Universe idea not because of a driving artist vision, but because they could not complete with DC making the same product. His understanding of the business of comics lead him to create something great.

On the bad side Stan seems like a huckster. He is living off creations from the 60s. He has not been a great comics writer in a long time, but he still finds ways to be in the media. It is easy to not trust what is coming out mouth.

On the good side, Stan loves the fans. He never talks bad about people who buy comics. He still loves comics and super-heroes. He also speaks well of the people who write comics now. I have never heard him be a grumpy old man. These are good things.

At comic con people treat Stan Lee like a god. People flock around him everywhere he goes. He as to walk around with security so he does not block up the place. People mob him everywhere he goes. He still stops for as long as he can and talks to people.

Stan Lee might has some strikes against him, but I think that the good outweighs the bad.

Comic Con 2006 was F'N Metal

Comic Con 2006 is F'N Metal
Originally uploaded by earthdog.

On Saturday at Comic Con I got a little bored taking pictures. I wanted to find something tun to do. I was alone so I could not pose with the people in costume. I wanted to do something I could make a Flickr Set out of. I kept on seeing the Jesus is Metal shirts. I thought to myself it would be cool to ask people in costume to throw horns like heavy metal.

I got great reactions from most of the people that I asked. A few said no and few did not understand. For the most part the people in costume thought it as a great idea. Some of them really rocked out.

The pictures that look the best are the people who totally broke character to throw horns. I think that is the spirit of metal. The problem is if you do not break character you ended up looking like you are casting a spell like Dr. Strange. Comic Con 2006 is F'N Metal For my money, Dr. Strange just is not metal.

I was really hoping to start a meme with this. I know other people saw me doing this, but I have not seen people I don't know post photos like this. I also was hoping someone would Boing Boing this set or somethings. It looks like I had no such luck. I will have to get more of these photos next year. Maybe If I work at it long enough it will become a meme.

Vacation - Back to the real world.

Originally uploaded by earthdog.

My vacation has been over since Wednesday. I have still been recovering with all that time. I think after this weekend I will be back to my normal self. I still have some Comic Con photos to sort through and post. I am really behind when it comes to posting photos to Flickr. I have a lot of non-Comic Con Vacation photos to sort through. For right now you can check out my Comic Con 2006, Women in Costume, and Summer Vacation 06 Sets.

I still have a lot to write about from vacation. I will apologize now to the people who expect my life to be up to date in my blog. I am going to write a lot of entries about what has been happening over the last couple of weeks. I know that my writing will not totally be in order. That is just one of the things you will have to put up with.

I think I am going to blog as many photos as I have good stories for. I took over 1000 photos at Comic Con and over 1000 photos on the rest of my vacation. I think I need to put some of those photos to a little more use than just posting them to flickr.

Comic Con Prep Part 3

March 26: Ready to go
Originally uploaded by earthdog.

I hate packing for trips. Packing is only cool when you get to buy new stuff for the trip. I am not getting to do this for this trip. That means I just need to pack all my old crap. That is never fun.

There are lots of reasons I do not like packing. One of the reasons is that I always pack too much stuff. Even when I try to pack light I pack too much stuff. Since I am away from my stuff, I want to bring everything with me. I need to not bring stuff just in case I need to use it.

I know I need to break myself of this habit. I should find a way to travel light. Taking my car does not help. Driving makes it really easy to take too much stuff. I take less stuff when I fly, but it is still too much.

Comic Con Prep Part 1

Jimmy Gownley
Originally uploaded by earthdog.

I have my Comic Con Pass. I am very excited. I am looking forward to the trip. It will be good to get away for a little while. The trip seems to have taken on a new insignificance. There is a lot of things I need to hold off until I get back from San Diego.

I plan on taking as many photos as I can and posting them to flickr. Everyone knows that nothing drives flickr views like women in geek costume.

This year I plan on taking more photos because I have a better camera and I am more involved with Flickr. I think last year Comic Con was one of my tipping points getting me more involved with flickr. There is something I love about talking photos of people in costume. I guess it is not something I get to take pictures of in my everyday life.

Jimmy Gownley was nice enough to get me a pro badage. I wonder if that will change the way people treat me at the show. My guess is that nothing will change. It is still cool to have a pro badge.

Going to Comic Con in Sad Diego is my big vacation for the summer. I like it because it is a chance to see my friends and the show is fun. The summer is going by so quickly. Comic con give me a chance to put work aside and just do something for myself. That is going to be a good thing with the way this summer is going.
