Apple Smack Down

comic con 2008: super smart Phone

I read today that the iPhone ad that said the iPhone goes to "all parts of the Internet" has been banned. When I saw this ad for the first time I said "except for any page that plays flash." I like when companies are called on adds that are misleading. I know that Apple was comparing themselves to phone that can only get to mobile versions of web sites, but it is not like flash is rarely used. It is a big thing.

Let define Green

I read that Norway outlaws "Green" car advertisements. They do not want any car to advertise to say they car is good for the environment.

The rationale for the ban is simple. All cars pollute, even fuel-efficient cars, so calling a car green is a bit of a stretch. It’s like referring to filtered cigarettes as healthy. Norwegian government-type person Bente Oeverli explains, “Cars cannot do anything good for the environment except less damage than others.”

This is a good point. A while ago I thought it was funny to see the Prius commercials where they say it is good for the environment. In the US we know that people are not going to give up their cars until we have to. There is no way we will give up until there is no gas left. Environmentalist in the US want us to be less bad. In Norway they are more likely to get people to give up their cars I guess.

I like this idea. I have a hard time seeing us consume our way to a better environment. I know people who see it that way. It takes a ton of water to make a pound of coffee, even if it is organic and shade grown.

Brand v. Self

The other night I watched an episode of Frontline about advertisement titled, The Persuaders. The episode really got me thinking about brand. Which brands are important to and which brands are not. There are brands I prefer, but I do not think they are core to my purchase decisions. There are brands I prefer, but I do not see myself a fan of that company.

The show is all about how companies get people to buy their products. I would like to say that I always buy the best product for me. I would like to say that advertisements never change my ideas. I know that is not true. I know that I see ads and want the product in the ad. I see ads and decide what I am going to have for dinner.

After seeing the episode of Frontline I thought of the idea of the tag cloud of my brands. Seeing which brands are in my life. It is not only the brands I know I like, but the brand I use begrudgingly. I know that the tag cloud below is not accurate, but it is a start. I think it could be an interesting art project.

Disney to Cox: Lets find a way to make VOD less compelling

I heard on the radio today that ABC and ESPN is working a deal to offer free VOD content to Cox cable, but commercials cannot be avoided. It is not that VOD already has enough problems. On top of that you are going to force VOD users to watch commercials.

To me this is a pure sign that TV networks do not understand the change that is going on out there. They not know understand what technologies is doing. To say there are ads and you have to watch them, that will not work. People where commercial skipping long before DVRs by going to the bathroom.

I heard someone on the radio said that these costs must be paid for. If not by commercials, they will passed onto to the viewers. Viewers are already paying too much for cable. The TV network that wins will be the one that drives down the cost of their content, find other ways to monetize their content, and lets the user be in control of the content. Making your customers watch commercials will not save you.

Super Bowl Wrap Up

The game was okay. It was not a great played game. Both teams were sloppy. I think the rain had something to do with it. Both teams dropped the football several times. They showed that it is hard to play with a wet ball.

The rule of thumb in the NFL is that the best football is played during the conference championship games. I think this is true this year. Both teams played better the last game. I think it has something to do with the hype machine that is the Super Bowl.

I am happy to see that I am not the only person who thinks that Dominic Rhodes should have been the Super Bowl XLI MVP. Carrying the ball 21 times for 113 yards he put the game away in the end. He was the key to the Bears not getting more chances to score at the end of the game. I think that Manning won because he was the story all week.

I thought that Beard Comb Over was the best commercial. It looks like the rest of the country did not agree with me.

Attack Ads

I am sick of all the attack ads in the Democratic gubernatorial primary. I am sick of all the mud that is being slung back and forth. I wish someone else would swoop in and call these two for all their bull. I know it is not going to happy. I just wish that going negative did not work so well.

To Tell the Truth

I think it is funny that the Apple G5 TV Advert Banned in the UK. I never knew computer companies needed to be truthful on in ads.

Super Bowl Ads

Yes, I watched the Super Bowl from beginning to end. While the game got a little boring in the middle, I did skip out on it. I watched the whole game because I was at a Super Bowl party. I could not skip out on the game. I would have been bored with this game if I was not watching it with other people.

I am glad I saw the whole game. My two favorite games where in second half of the game. Most years all of the good commercials are at the start of the game. They want to make sure people see the ads. If the Super Bowl is a blowout, people do not watch the commercials in the second half. This has happened in the past.

My two favorite commercials were both from the same organization. The first commercial was one where it counted up the tally for the cost terrorism. The second commercial is the one where people are talking about using drugs and talk about committing crime. Both commercials are hard-edged, serous, and direct. It takes a stand on an issue that makes people uncomfortable. The commercials draw a direct line between terrorism and drug money.

I like the commercial because it takes a stand. There have been clear connections between drug money and terror in some countries. Both Afghanistan and Columbia fit into this category. It says there are consequence for actions. If you buy drugs from an illegal source, that money will go to do more illegal things. If you are buying pot from your connection, think about where your money is going. I know this makes some of my friends uncomfortable. I think you should be uncomfortable.

I also like this commercial because it got people talking. People are talking how valid this idea is. People are talking if drugs should be illegal or not. People are talking about the ideas the commercials carry. People are talking about if they are true or not. I know all my links have been back to theantidrug.com, but they do list their sources. You might not agree with the tactic, but you need to see the reality.

To be honest, Pepsi ads, Bud ads, Monster.com ads, mlife ads, and just about ever other ad is just mental pollution. Pepsi did not need to show me Britney so I can buy a Coke anyway. I might have thought some of the ads where entertaining, but I do not respect their message. At least these ads are trying to do something real. If you want to call me on this idea, you can.
