Superman Limbo

Comic Con 2008: World's Finest Tattoos

I am not surprised that Warner Brothers does not know what to do with Superman. The Dark Knight made so much money the logical thing to do is get more movies like it out into the market place. That would include a new Superman movie, Justice League, World's Finest Heroes Movie.

The problem is what do you do with Superman. Are you going to say that Batman begins and Superman Returns happen in the same world? Are you going to Reboot Superman all together to give it a new feeling? What kind of movie to you want the next Superman movie to be.

Christopher Nolan's Batman world seems hard to introduce superheros to. So far he has really sold the world as being a real life place. The Dark Knight really seemed like any American city. The world of Bryan Singer's Superman Returns seems to almost be in a different key. It makes me think the two movies would clash if you tired to mix them together.

You do not have to make Metropolis gritty and dark like the Gotham City. In fact the best way to do is for Metropolis to seem like Utopia while Gotham City is dark and gritty. I worry that no one can really fold another movie into the world of Christopher Nolan's Batman. Maybe you could also a Green Arrow movie there, but it would be hard to sell. Maybe the Dark Knight is so good, that Warner Brothers will not be able to cash in as much as they would like.

Wonder Woman

Comic Con 2006: Wonder Woman
Originally uploaded by earthdog.
I was thinking about Wonder Woman. She has never been an interesting character to me. Her most interesting stories are all the way back in World War 2. In my life time the most interesting stories have been about her and the Gods of Olympus. I like the stories where the Gods are worried about losing their power because no one worships them.

I am not sure what would make an interesting Woman Woman story now. I like her in the Justice League. I thought she was a great character in the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited cartoons. That might be because she was being played off Superman and Batman.

I wonder if the hard part of Wonder Woman is that she is so Iconic, but what she stands for has changed a lot over the years. To be honest, Batman and Superman have not changed all that much in the past 75 years. They have had a lot of character development, but they are still icons of something easy to understand.

I think the Icon of Wonder Woman is harder to understand. In part is it harder to think about what a woman should be. I think there are lots of different images of what a Wonder Woman could be. If I wrote Wonder Woman I would make this a conflict for her. I would make it clear to her that she thought about how the world saw her.

On Yahoo Answers someone asks if DC should change how Wonder Woman dresses. I think the answers are pretty interesting. It says a lot about how people see women and Wonder Woman. I think these questions should exist inside of the the comic book also

I have some ideas what I would do with a Wonder Woman story. Some ideas that I do not want to share here. I should try writing a Wonder Woman story. If there are any Wonder Woman fans out there you should let me know what Wonder Woman stories I should read

The Man From Krypton and Me

I have been reading The Man From Krypton. It is a book about Superman. It is a collection of short essays about Superman. There is a lot to think about with Superman. He is an American cultural icon with over 80 years of stories written about his. With thousands of issues of comics there have been many writers what have added to the myth of Superman. All of this makes for an interesting body of work to write about.

It should surprise no one to find out I was a comic book fan growing up. When I was in elementary school and junior high school I liked Marvel comics more than DC comics. DC Comic, the home of Superman, seemed to make less sense to me. It was easy for me to figure out what was happening inside the Marvel Universe. DC did not have that same consistency. The whole DC Multiverse with Earth-One, Earth-Two, Earth-X and so on, was stupid to me at the time. (My favorite was Earth-Hostess where Hostess snack cakes and pies were all that were needed from hero. I wonder what happened to that earth during Crisis on Infinite Earths

I did not start reading Superman until after Crisis on Infinite Earths. I loved John Byrne's Man of Steel. Before Crisis Superman was powerful enough to move planets (some of the time). When I was a young comic book reader I was really into Super heroes powers and weaknesses. Superman seemed to be too powerful and had too specific of a weakness. I liked to see how super heroes would be the odds. The odds were never against Superman.

The restart of the Superman storyline made it something I enjoyed. I also felt that I did not need to know 50 years worth of Superman stories to understand it. The Man of Steel story was great. Byrne did a lot to add humanity to the character of Superman. I think that is important. If you write Superman as a character that is not in touch with his humanity, there is very little to work with.

For the ten years I read Superman I found out that there were few good ways to write Superman as a main character and lots of bad ways. The question about Superman is what is compelling about him as a character. It is not struggle for him to beat any super villain. The stories have to be about something else.

I think the best Superman stories are the ones where the conflict is within him. When his life as Clark Kent is in conflict with his life as Superman. I think that Superman wants to be just a regular guy. He wants to be Clark Kent more than he wants to be Superman. If not he would just be Superman all the time. The problem is that Superman does not have any friends and Clark Kent does.

The next most interesting set of stories to me is when Superman has to make moral choices about using his powers. How many times can Superman put Lex Luthor back in Jail before you just want to kill him. Superman is so powerful it would be easy to see him get frustrated with the world around him. The storied like when he killed the Zod of the pocket universe. Superman has to live with killing someone. It is a great story.

The one idea that I would love to see explored is Superman is who everyone needs his help, yet he cannot help everyone. There are just too many things happening at the same time. Anytime a plane crashes, why did Superman not save them? Every time there is a fire, where is Superman to put it out? Samaritan in Astro City deals with this a little. In those stories the Samaritan is under stress because he cannot be everywhere. I want to see how people be angry at Superman because he was not there when he needed them. I would love to read more stories about the Superman backlash.

Reading the Man From Krypton has got me to think about writing comics. Part of me has always wanted to write comics. I have a couple of good ideas what I would do with a Superman story. One idea is a world where super humans stop being super heroes and super villains and just live everyday life. In that world Superman would become a one man habit for humanity. With his speed and power he could end homelessness on his own.

One of my recent favorite Superman stories is Superman: Red Son. I like it because it is not only a 'what if...' story, but it also deals with the nature of Superman. What parts of him would not be changed if history was different. It is worth looking into.

Comic Con 2006: Stan "The Man" Lee

Comic Con 2006: Stan The Man Lee
Originally uploaded by earthdog.

I think I understand Stan Lee much more as an adult than I did as a kid. I think he created the Marvel Universe idea not because of a driving artist vision, but because they could not complete with DC making the same product. His understanding of the business of comics lead him to create something great.

On the bad side Stan seems like a huckster. He is living off creations from the 60s. He has not been a great comics writer in a long time, but he still finds ways to be in the media. It is easy to not trust what is coming out mouth.

On the good side, Stan loves the fans. He never talks bad about people who buy comics. He still loves comics and super-heroes. He also speaks well of the people who write comics now. I have never heard him be a grumpy old man. These are good things.

At comic con people treat Stan Lee like a god. People flock around him everywhere he goes. He as to walk around with security so he does not block up the place. People mob him everywhere he goes. He still stops for as long as he can and talks to people.

Stan Lee might has some strikes against him, but I think that the good outweighs the bad.
