Best Albums of the Decade

This is the plan. I am going to post my list of the ten best from year year of the decade. I am going to start with 2000 as the first year. I know there are technical reasons that decade starts in 2001, but I think decades also have social starts also. I am picking February 19, 2000 as the start of the decade. It is the day that George W. Bush beat John McCain in the South Carolina Republican Presidential Primary. I think that date opens the door for everything else that happens in the 2000s. That is besides the point.

After I make the top ten list every year, I am going to make my overall list for the 100 best albums of the decade. Yes, there are some albums that might be honorable mention one year, but beat out an album from another year. Let me know what you think.

Wrapping up the decade

I have been taking part in Aught Music blog. It is an music blog put together by Jeremy Bushnell. The point is for people to write little love notes or appreciations for the songs of the last decade. The project is broken up to be done year by year. We have just finished up 2000. I am sending my posts for 2001 songs that will be posted over the next couple of weeks.

If you like you can see my posts. I would suggest looking through all the posts. There is a lot to look at there. I would recommend it all.

best photo of 2008

best of 2008

On flickr I made a set of the best photos I took in 2008. Above is the mosaic of the photos. I have not decided which one is the best yet. If you have any ideas please let me know. I am trying to pick the one that is the best for photographic reasons, not sentimental reasons. This year that might be really hard. That is why I need some outside input.

Best Albums of this decade

April 21: scattered

Is it too early for me to be thinking about the best albums of the 00 decade? I hope not, because I have been thinking about them for a while. I know that if I do not think about this list now, I will never get the list done in a reasonable time.

The funny thing, this is the decade that I have been the most interested in music. In the 80s I was very young when it started and could not find music for myself. In the 90s I was very connected to music while I was in college, but after that I all but forgot about music. By the end of the decade I was not listening to anything.

Because of the internet, iPods, and blogs, I really connected to music early in this decade. It has been a great decade for music. There are a lot of bands that I know of that I doubt I would have heard of in former decades. It is true that the music industry has also changed in this time. These bands might have been signed in the past.

I have started working on my list of the best albums from this decade. So far the list has over 100 albums on it. Those are just albums which I have tracks from on my laptop. I think the list will get bigger as I look at all the albums from the decade. I know there are things I must be forgetting.

Of course this means I still listen to albums. I am not sure how many other people are still listening to albums. I keep on hearing how albums are going away, but I have not see it yet. The bands I listen to are still putting out albums. It might be a little while longer before they go away. This might be the last decade for a list like this.

Let me know if you want to do this as a project. I want to know if I can get lists from enough people so I can give more than just my ranking.

Is anyone else going to make a list of the best albums from the 00's?
How many albums will you put on your list?
How detailed are you going to be about the ranking?

Update: I am defining the decade at 2000-2009. I know the whole zero year thing is in play, but I think it is esthetically better to start on 2000.

raccoon best music of 2005

Speaking of the best music of 2005, Jeremy has posted his list of the the top ten albums of 2005. Jeremy's taste are not like most of the people I know. Jeremy has always sent me his best of 2005 mixes. I should post the track lists of the mixes if he does not.

eMusic Best of 2005

One of the main places I found music in 2005 was eMusic. I love eMusic because it has a lot of odd stuff. They are carving out a place as the best place for indie rock and indie pop on the internet. Lots of the songs from my best of 2005 mix will be from eMusic. I would have never listened to Spoon - Gimme Fiction if it was not for eMusic.

The writers at eMusic are posting the list of Best Albums of 2005: 10-1. It is a pretty interesting list. I think by looking at this list the other lists you can get a good idea of what you can get from eMusic.

More Music

Jeremy saw the entry where I say he is one of my musical influences and my album of the year entry. He sent me his top ten list for 2001.

From his web log he links to the best of the 2001 lists at Othermusic.com. I am happy to say Ben Folds - Rockin' The Suburbs is not on any of their lists.

Year End Music

It is the time of the year that everyone makes there best of lists for music. I used to be really into these kinds of lists. I would always be disappointed when the bands and records would be passed over. I was hoping that people would see the same things in this music that I saw.

I would make my own top list. Maybe if I made my old top 10 list of that year's records people would see what I saw in those records. I would send the list to my friends and e-mail it to other people. I would not get much response. The people that knew me would say that the list matched what they expected from me.

I still love music. I listen to about two hours of music a day, but I no longer care about new music. I have no interest in following around new music. I cannot keep up with that treadmill. I just look for things that I like and listen to them. Most of the new music I hear does not hold my interest very long. I do not connect with it.

I did not buy many CDs in the past year. I spend most of my time downloading songs from Napster, listening to all those songs once Napster closed down, and making CDs of those songs. I bought a couple of CDs, but it was mostly old stuff that had been popping around my head. I bought stuff like old R.E.M. and Smiths albums that I crave hearing every once in a while or stuff I missed the first time around like Belle and Sebastian or Neutral Milk Hotel.

There was one new CD that I bought this year. It is a CD that has been spinning around my CD player since I got it. I do not think I have gone a week without listening to it.

I would like to declare Ben Folds Rockin' The Suburbs the album of the year. It is hard for me to express how good I think this album is. It is one of the best things that I have heard in years. It is an album that should be admired for both its sound and lyrics. It has all of Ben Folds trademark piano playing, but you do not feel like you have heard it all before. It is an album that moves slowly over a landscape of ideas, constructing a coherent world of thoughts and feelings.

What I like about Ben Folds is that I feel that he is a guy about my age write songs about things people my age should care about. I do not feel that I am listening to people who are ten years older or younger then me. His songs make sense to me. I can understand what he is getting at. I think there is both an intent and texture to the songs that fit into my life.

I think that this is a great album, but I have a hard time seeing my friends really embrace it. I do not think they have the kind of patience that this album need. It is full of songs that need to be discovered one my one. I think most of my friends do not like albums that unfold that way.
