My Music Blog

I am not sure if anyone cares or not, but I have started a mostly music blog over at Vox. I can upload MP3s and they stream from the Vox site. I like being able to share music with other people. I was telling my sister Kathy that the internet has made me more interested in Music. I like it not because I can read things like Pitchfork media. I like it because I can read what people like me think about music.

Faces

SV Blogger Meetup: Art Show

I saw these drawings and I knew I had to take a photo. If I had someplace to hand the art I would have bought something. When I took the photo the art was for sale at Barefoot Coffee.

The Party is coming to an end

There is a new report saying that Caltrans should limit hybrids in carpool lane. I am not surprised by this. It had to come to an end sometime. We cannot have millions of Hybrids driving in the HOV lane.

I think one of the problems is defining hybrids. A hybrid SUV is better than a regular SUV, but it gets worst highway millage than my Corolla. If I have an extra passenger in my Corolla the MPG/person is a lot better than a solo hybrid SUV.

I do not think hybrids still need this kind of help for sales. I think it is more important to encouraging carpooling that the purchase of Hybrids. We will have to see what happens from here.

Better search

I know lots of people who think that Google is perfect. They think there is no need for any other search engine. I like Google, but it is not perfect. It looks like other people are looking for better search also.

It is hard to describe what is wrong with search engines. A user needs to know how to make a better search themself. They need a better idea of what they want so they can find it. I know that a lot of this has to do with ranking search results and putting more work into search might not work for people.

I wonder if anyone will beat Google or if Google will offer more ways to search the same data.

Guessing Game

I have been reading how everyone is guessing Steve Job's annoncement next week will be about an Apple Movie Service. For a couple years not people have been touting a download movie service as a killer app. All the time I hear how Netflix without the DVD would change the world. There is a geek elite out there that really want this.

I am not sure what will be announced, but I have a hard time seeing an Apple movie download service changing the way people watch movies. Lets say that apple starts this service on Apple only platforms. That means I would have to spend at least $600 to get a MacMini. For $600 I could get a DVD player and a few years worth of Netflix.

Second, I am not sure people are hooking computers up to their TVs. Yeah a 21 inch monitor is a big as my family's TV when I was growing up, but I am not sure people can make an iMac useful for both watch movies and using as a computer. I think the home media computer is still a rare thing. It would take a few years before something like this would really catch on.

Third, I am not sure a pricing structure could compete with renting/buying DVDs. It takes a log of bandwidth to download a movie at DVD quality. I am not sure that people will be willing to watch movies in the current 320x240 iTunes TV show resolution.

Forth, I am not sure enough people really want a movie download service. Right now Video On Demand systems are not as well used as cable companies expected. All of these systems let people play and pause the movies. Why would a movie download system have a bigger impact that Video On Demand which is already hooked up to customers TV sets.

I am not sure what Apple will announce. If they do announce a video download system people will be falling all over themselves to say this is the end of home movies as we have known it. I am just not sure Apple can be the company that can make that change.

The Emmy

The Emmy
Originally uploaded by earthdog.

TiVo won an Emmy for television technology. It is the second time we won one. This time the statutettes were brought into the office so everyone could get their picture with them. The leadership of the company wanted to make it clear that it was everyone's Emmy.

I know that this is not a big deal for some people. I still think it is pretty cool. September 15 will mark 7 years at TiVo. I feel that working here has been great for me. I feel like I have been part of something much bigger than myself.

Stupid Thinking

Record Purse record purse

I went to the tapestries art festival in San Jose on Monday. One of my goals was to take photograph of cool products. The first one I found was the Record Purse. It was kind of cool. When I pulled my camera out the guy jumped in front of me and said no photos. He said that it was patented product and that his wife wanted to protect the design. I said that the patent protects the design. I told him I was only going to post a photo because I thought it was cool and that would promote his product. He said that he is only doing what his wife said.

If I wanted to steal the design of the purse I would have just bought one and reverse engineered it.

The Stars Say I Should Go To Las Vegas

I did not know there was such as thing as an astrology travel guide. It is telling me I should go to Vegas or New York City for a fall vacation. i am not even sure I am going to take a fall vacation this year. A trip to New York would be nice. I am just not sure if this is really the place for me to go or not. What does the birth order travel guide say for this year?

The Summer Is Ending

It is Labor Day and I am trying to figure out where my summer went. As an adult summer is more elusive that it was as a kid. When you are in school summer is different that being in school. You know you have to make the most out of summer. You can see the days count away. Most of the time I was happy for school to start up again.

As an adult summer is no different than the rest of the year. I can take my vacation any time. Summer is just a time where I am worried about how hot my apartment gets. I get to go to baseball games in the summer, but sports go year round and I can always go to a game.

I will admit that I will be glad to see this summer come to a close. It has not been the greatest summer for me. The three markers of this summer for me have been my ex-girlfriend breaking up with me, Comic Con, and Labor day. The summer broke perfectly into two halves. Now that the summer is over I am not sure how my life will be different.
