Worst of all Time

I found this list of the Worst Baseball Teams of All time. I am happy to see that there are no Phillies teams on this list. I am unhappy to see that all of the Honorable Mention teams are Phillies teams.

Thinking about it for a few minutes, this might be worse. These Phillies teams were bad enough to stink, but not bad enough to be the worst. I always think that third place is the worst place for a baseball team. Good enough to tease you all season long, not good enough to really be in the pennant race.

This makes me think I need to dust off my old "My Least Favorite Phillies of All-Time" team. I have worked on it before, but I have never posted it on my blog.

Bike to work day

Bike to work day
Originally uploaded by earthdog.

Thursday was National Bike to Work Day. For a while now I have been thinking about getting my bike fixed up. I always loved riding, but I have not been doing it much since I lived in San Jose. Last week I finally got off my butt and did something about it. I had no idea that bike to work day was this week.

Bike to work day has been an event at work for the last couple of years. It is not a huge thing, but I have seen the signs in the past and felt bad about not trying it. Now that my bike was fixed, I would have no excuse for not trying.

I have not rode my bike in years. I bought my bike in August of 1999 in Portland. I wrote it a lot that month. Portland is a great place to ride a bike. In September of 1999 I moved to San Jose. San Jose is not a very friendly bicycle city. It has been in storage (behind the couch) all that time.

My bike route from my apartment to the office was about 8.8 miles. It was not the most direct route, but I wanted to stay close to the light rail line. I wanted to be able to get on the light rail if the trip was too much for me. I got my bike from the bike shop on Friday, biked it around the block a couple of times Sunday, and rode it eight blocks on Monday. I knew I needed a back up plan for Bike to work day. The light rail was that backup plan.

I can finally say, Yes! I have biked to work. I made it all the way there on my own power. I did not have to resort to my backup plan. The trip was pretty interesting. Most of it was easier than I expected. The first 6 miles just flew by. I was not tired or aching at all.

The last two miles just killed me. I had two hills in those last two miles and it was just enough to zap me. I felt great when I got to work. I was happy that I was able to get through those tough stretches.

My only problem is that I was tired for the rest of the day. My legs felt heavy and I really wanted to take a nap. I got though the day, but every time I stood up I wanted to take a nap.

I did not ride all the way home. I biked two miles to a light rail stop and took the light rail the rest of the way home. My legs were so tired that I just had to take the light rail.

Now I have to figure out where to go from here. I know that I should keep biking to work. It is a good form of exercise and I like it. I need to make it so it does not wear me out and effect my work. I am thinking of riding 20 minutes and taking the light rail the rest of the way. That way I can build up my stamina. I know I just need to stick with it.

No baseball for San Jose

The Mercury News said: S.J. voters jeer ballpark plan. It looks like my city will not get its act together to get a baseball stadium. I know lots of people think it is a waste of money, but I want a baseball team in San Jose. I think it would be good for the city. The reason I do not go to more A's games now is because I do not want to sit in traffic after work. I guess it is not going to happen.

Russ Springer Update

Russ Springer has been suspened for four games. He says he will not appeal his suspension. I think he did the right thing by hitting Barry Bonds, but I also think MLB did the right thing. It looks like Russ Springer is willing to won what he did. I have to admire him for that.

In defense of Russ Springer

The other day Russ Springer hit Barry Bonds after throwing at him three times. Springer got ejected from the game and a standing ovation from the Houston fans.

I stand behind Russ Springer as a life long reliever. Barry Bonds has knocked a lot of relievers out of games. I would be ticked off if I was a pitcher like Russ Springer. Barry Bonds did not only make himself look good, he also made pitchers look bad. You cannot cheat without cheating off someone else.

I am not usually for pitchers throwing at batters. If a batter hits a home run off you, you should have thrown a better pitch. If that guy hit a home run off you because he was cheating he might deserve to get hit.

Gnarls Barkley

I am not sure what this means, but I am now using Best Week Ever to find new music. After seeing them talk about Gnarls Barkley on Friday, I went out and bought the album St. Elsewhere on Saturday. The clip of the song Crazy make my ears perk up in the way only a pop smash can. I used the listening station at record store to make sure this was not a primitive Radio Gods situation. (Only one listenable song on the album)

I have been listening to this album all the time over the last couple of days. Once I hear the songs I cannot get them out of my head. Just A Thought is a song that jumps out of the speakers and into my head every time I hear it. I just cannot stop singing it.

The album is all over the place. I can hear hints of Outkast, Moby, and Marvin Gay. They even cover a Violent Femmes song. It being all over the place is both a good and a bad thing. I like the crazy ways the songs are not like each other, but it does not make for a good album experience. I cannot find a thread that runs from song to song.

This album is worth hearing. There are some great songs on it. I just cannot say it is a great album.

As of Today you can hear Crazy and Smiley Faces on their web site.

UPDATE: Listening to this album more I think I see something else. All the Danger Mouse albums have the same problem. I do not feel like he is giving me an artist vision. I feel like he is saying, look at all the cool things I can do with music. I wonder if he will keep on doing this.

American Beauty

I watched American Beauty last night with Dreamgirl. I have had this movie on DVD for years, but I have not seen it since it was in the theater. I remember loving it in the theater. It had been so long that I forgot what I loved about it. There are a handful of iconic scenes in that movie. Often I remember the icons and not the movie as a whole.

I have been avoiding rewatching American Beauty. I was worried about it aging poorly. Lots of movies that make a big splash when they come out fall apart over time. I could not remember if American Beauty was specific to that moment in time or not. When Dreamgirl picked it I was curious to watch it again.

I was amazed at how well the movie holds up. I was surprised at how vital the main character of Lester Burnham still seems. The combination of Alan Ball's writing and Kevin Spacey portrayal of this character just makes him seem amazing. If this movie came out today it would still work. It only came out in 1999, but the world feels like a much different place. The movie does a good job not rooting itself in a specific moment in time.

My only problem with this movie is how poorly written the female characters are. The two compelling characters are Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey) and Ricky Fitts (Wes Bentley). The movie moves around these characters very well. I think all the females are under used. I would have liked Jane Burnham (Thora Birch) and Angela Hayes (Mena Suvari) seem very flat. I would have like to know more about them. They almost seem like devices for the male characters.

If you have not seen this movie in a while it is worth seeing again. This might be the last great movie of the 20th Centry.
