Argh!!!

iTunes just took a dump on me. The iTunes library file just died. The reason iTunes is so powerful is because it has a database on the back end. In that database file are all of the star ratings, playcounts, and playlists. It is cool when that file is working correctly. If it get corrupted everything is lost.

I back up my music all the time. I always make sure that I do not loose any music. The problem is that I have not backed up my iTunes library file ever. I had forgot about the library file taking a dump. This means I have thousands of songs and it looks like I have never listened to any of them.

I had already finished my best of 2005 mixes. Now I have to remake them. I have to figure out what I put on thos mixes. This sounds easier than it is. I have thousands of files to look through. I think that it is going to take me a couple of weeks to figure out what should be on my 2005 mix.

Mayfly 2005

The idea of a mayfly is to summerize your year in 20 words. I have been doing a yearly mayfly since 2001. I like the idea of melting my year down to so few words. Not everyone is going to understand, but there is still something poitic about it.

The Year In Flickr

wall of Flickr
Originally uploaded by earthdog.

As anyone can tell, I used Flickr a lot in 2005. I signed up for flickr in 2004, but I did not use it much. That was back when I signed up for every social network site I knew of. I did not find that thing that made flickr special. A bunch of my friends were using flickr by the start of 2005, but laziness is a hard thing to overcome. I was taking a lot of digital photos, but I was not doing much with them.

In April of 2005 I went to a flickr party at Sylph*'s house. I spent the whole night talking to photographers. All of them were better photographers than I. Being there made me excited about the idea of sharing my photos. At that moment I knew what was cool about Flickr. I would be happy to share my photos with people like Wirehead and Pinhole. I also like being able to see their photos.

In Silicon Valley there are a good number of Flickr users. I inspired some to join and others to use it more. The more people that I know that use Flickr the cooler it is. I love being able to see everyone else's photos. I love that people use it in all different ways.

Flickr has become a window into my everyday life. You cannot see everything that is going on, but you can get some idea of how I live. My brother Sean told me the other day that he likes seeing my Flickr photos because they make him feel closer to me. When I hear that I know that I am doing one of the things I set out to do.

Flickr is the best new technology in my life for 2005. I do not see myself using it any less in 2006. If I buy a digital SLR camera it will be because of Flickr. I think this is a real killer app for digital photography. I think that camera companies should encourge the use of Flickr. I think it would sell more cameras.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone's 2006 photos on flickr.

Higher Gas Prices

I tripped acorss the blog The New Vernacular and the entry: Maybe higher gas prices are exactly what we need. I think the guy has an interesting argument. I am not sure I totally buy it. He only writes about the consumer end of gas prices. There are many businesses around America that depend on the price of gas. The cost of gas increasing change a lot of the economic realities of the US. It could change more things then people realize.

I am not saying that increased gas prices would not be a good thing in the long run. I think that Americans should think more about how much gas they are using. I am just saying that these changes would be harder than some people would realize. The cost that would be paid would not be small.

Whatever Happened to Whit Stillman

I was thinking about Whit Stillman lately. It appears I am not the only person who wonders what happened to him. He has not made a movie since The Last Days of Disco. That came out so long ago that I saw that movie in Pennsylvania. He has not put out a movie in seven years.

I wonder what happened. Could he no long find people to make his movies? Is he no longer interested in making movies? Did he find something that he liked doing better? Did his piss off the wrong person and no one is willing to sign the check?

I always like his movies. Many people say that his characters were just whinny yuppies. I would have to disagree. I always thought his characters were exerstential. I could understand the malaise his characters were under.

Maybe Wilt Stillman worked throught what made his films interesting. Maybe this is a good idea that he has not made another movie.
