Friday Five

1. How long have you had a weblog? Thursday, October 04, 2001

2. What was your first post about?
I explained the name Sad Salvation. It is kind of a mission statement.

3. How many changes (name, location, etc.) of your weblog have there been, if more than one?
I have not changed names. I have changed locations once. I have started two sub blogs, Travel-blogue and Super Karate Monkey Fist.

4. What CMS (content management system) do you use? Do you like it or do you want to try something else?
I am using blogger. It seemed to work pretty well for me. I think that it would take a lot for me to switch.

5. Do you read people who have both a journal and a weblog? Or do you prefer to read people who have all of their writing in one central place?
I usually just read one. I have not seemed to be able to keep reading people who have two of them. I think that a general blog is a pretty good idea.

Work Place Accidents

I am not sure how I am going to die, I just hope that it is not in a vat of chocolate. I do have the feeling that my death will be cause by one of my stupid mistakes.

I am not sure I ever want to hear this conversation.

Personal Music

For a long time Jeremy has been talking about the idea of taking responsibility for our own entertainment. Most of the things we see or hear has been produced, test-marketed, packaged, marketed, and sold to us. We are looking at other people as being experts at things like music and art. Just 100 years ago sheet music was the way music made it's way across the society. I think we are losing the creativity that we all should be using.

For a lot time I have been telling myself that I should relax and just create. I keep on thinking about Tom7 and his Crap-Art Movement. There are things that are worth doing for the doing, not for how it turns out in the end. It is an idea that I want to move closer to.

Last night Eric and I spent some time in his studio. We had this idea to buy some Karaoke CDs and play with them. The track would make a good bed. We could screw around with samples and sound effects. The idea was to create something strange and wonderful. For a long time I have been telling Eric about my Tom Waitsesque lyric styling. He wanted to put to the test. I had a lot of fun singing. I could tell that Eric was happy to try all the screwed up things in his studio.

My goal is to make a 12 song album of just karaoke covers. I think it is a cool thing to do. I know that lots of people would not be interested in hearing those recordings. I think it would be a good thing for my creative process. It is cool to be making something with my own voice.

There is a computer program that will let you make your own karaoke covers. I have not tried it yet, but it sounds like you can do a lot of cool things with it.

I will start posting songs once we get some done. What songs do you think I should sing?

Just Another Cultural Co-Op? Blogging hits the mainstream, for better or worse

I read this article and wonder who does not get the point. Is it them or me. The joy of the Blog explosion is that it is totally DYI. I am not going to stop reading people's blogs because there is a blog on the CNN site. I am trying to get away from those sites in the first place. I want to read web content created by people, not companies.

Tell me if I am not getting the point.

Phone Monkeys

Pyra, Blogger's parent company, is currently looking for a customer support person. I find this interesting because it was not too long ago that I was a phone monkey answering calls from the general public. I think that Pyra would be a cool company to work for, but I am not sure I could do this job again. I am not even sure if Pyra is the kind of company that could make money. I think it would be an adventure. It will have to an adventure for someone else.

Tuesday Too

1.) Do you think pornography is dangerous? Why, or why not?
No. I think people who are dangerous with pornography are dangerous without it. It is hard to make a case against pornography when we abuse sexual images to sell soda and cars. I would ban advertising before pornography.

2.) What do you think about people being held in jail without charges, without access to a lawyer, or a phone call for an indeterminate period of time?
We always have to be careful about the tools we use, less someone use them against us. I do not object to to the idea of being able to do this. I just this the Bush administration is going a little overboard. I would not have used this against the "dirty bomber." I think that they would have been able to get some other charges to stick.

3.) How do you feel about this US program?
I truely believe that if I see someone breaking the law, it is my duty to call the cops. I do not concider it being a "rat." I guess I say that I am taking Elia Kazan's point of view. If you see someone doing something wrong, you have to stand up and say something. I guess that program really does not bother me. I just want the right to defend myself if I am the person being accused.

Internet fun

I think that all my nomral users should go an fill out this survey. It is worth the effort.

The people down stairs

Last night the man who lives below me asked me to turn down the music. I live in a studio apartment so the music never really gets that loud. Below me is a marred Koran couple. They are nice, but they do not speak much english. They are the type of people who you try to be nice to, but they just smile and nod back to you.

The man said that I had been disturbing him with my music for a while now. This really scare me. I could have been the bad neighbor for a long time. It took him a long time to come up here. I purchased this set of speakers back in April. I hope that they have not waited 3.5 months to ask me to turn it down. I will have to be a better neighbor then that going forward.

Dream Ideas

I had this dream where I am sitting at a red light. My car is a convertible. I am just sitting there and waiting. This old man walks up to my car. He puts his hand on my arm and looks right in my eyes. "There are the places we are and the places that we want to be. We cannot let that difference get in our way." The light turns green and I roll ahead.

I do not know if I dreamt this or it was just a daydream. It still seems like something that is just popping around my head. I wonder how I can minimize those differences.

What we are doing

Quick! Before you get a chance to think about it. Why do you keep a weblog? Give me the off the top or your head answer.

Now take a moment and think. Think about what you keep on logging on everyday. Think about why you keep on updating things. Think about why you even have a web page to begin with.

I was reading a web article that made me think about all these things. My off the top of my head answer is because I have to write something. I might as well put it on the web. If I do not write things I start to feel hollow inside. I would like someone to read it.

After I think about it, I have a weblog because there has to be something good one the web. I do not want the web to be just a mall I can shop from at work. I do not want every web page to be owned by a company. I think it is important that people are out there. Right now the most interesting thing I can do is weblog. I think that is true for most people.

Check out Meg Hourihan's weblog. She seems to understand what we are all doing.
